Question

My son and daughter-in-law had some work done in the house and my 7 month old grandson was exposed (inhaling) to sawdust and bleach for a couple of days. We know it's not the best environment for him but we didn't anticipate this before the work began. Can you tell me if it will have negative health effects later on? They did open a window slightly and had the ceiling fan on for some time afterwards. thanks in advance.

Answer

Christine Hierlmaier Nelson Replied: The best thing to do is have your grandson examined by his pediatrician to ensure that his lungs are clear and healthy. It's worth the time to avoid further worry. In the future, I would avoid having him in the home during any type of painting, staining or chemical cleaning. Don't have him sleep in a room that has been freshly painted. Children can develop serious allergies and environmental illnesses from exposure to chemicals. Plus, it is too easy for them to get into things that may be hazardous when you are distracted with the project. Better safe than sorry. Thanks for your question

Amy Adams Replied: Good afternoon! Thank you for visiting Parental Wisdom! I would love to give you a firm answer, but since PW doesn't delve into answering medical questions, I would direct you or his parents to contact his pediatrician and pose this question. If you're afraid that this would illicit a poor response from his parents, you can always contact the County Health Department for the area that you live in, or ask your own doctor. Good luck!
