Sharon Silver
The Stop Reacting-Start Responding Parenting Coach
Helping parents bridge the gap between the logical adult world, the emotional world of children and the reality of every day life.

Biography - Sharon Silver smiles proudly when she speaks of her two sons, but that wasn't always the case. Sharon has lived what every parent is living, a real life, parenting real children. Her earlier days of parenting were filled with power struggles and frustration, just like everyone else. She went in search of answers, and found good ones, but they were hard to remember when she needed them, they had a lot of theory to read through, and the solutions didn't seem to address her real everyday life.

So Sharon went searching for the answers, and once she found them, she realized that she had a passion and drive to pass them on to others, and that's how ProActive Parenting was born.

Her website www.proacitveparenting.net is devoted to addressing the very things that began her career, everyday life. Her audio downloadable seminars address the issues parents face every day raising children ages 1-10. They deal with listening, power struggles and self control. There are also two new ways to deal with correcting a child, that work like every parent hopes timeout would work.

The methods used at ProActive Parenting are real, responsive, firm yet empowering, instinctual and heart-centered. Allowing parent and child to remain connected no matter what issue they're facing.

Sharon has been teaching and speaking about parenting for the last 18 years. She is currently the host of Ask Me on MomTV.

She has an education in Parenting and Early Childhood Development and four certifications as a Parent Educator. She also studied the work of Ginott, Faber/Mazlish, Brazelton, and Ames/Ilg. She's been a facilitator for The Cline/Fay Institute and Redirecting Children's Behavior. She also contributes to AskMoxie.com and TheMomEntrepreneur.com.

Lou Longo
Life Teacher
Motivational Speaker, Trainer, Coach, Father of Two

Biography - I was living the American Dream: picture perfect family, fast track on career and beautiful home. Then in November 2002, at age 34, I was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). This what not part of the plan. My children were ages 3 and 5 at the time.
My illness came on quickly and out of the blue. I am told I was unconscious in the Intensive Care Unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for over 7 weeks and placed on a ventilator. I was administered the “Rites of Passage” as my doctors told my family and friends “we have done everything we can for him medically; he is in God’s hands tonight.” My wife also prepared my boys for the possibility that I would be going to heaven. Somehow, I survived. My doctors at Dana Farber Cancer Institute refer to me as the “Miracle Boy”, since I suffered extreme complications and trauma to my body and actually lived long enough to talk about it.
And talk about it is what I am doing. I tell everybody that despite the complications, trauma and rehabilitation I went through, it was nothing compared to what my wife, parents, friends and family, especially my children, had to endure. I may never know the total impact it had on my children, as although we do talk about it every now and then, I wish no child ever has to endure cancer with a loved one. But until we find a cure, we need to help those that do.
I was a student for the first 22 years of my life. I worked as a leader in higher education for the next 7 years and then I became a manager, including at the executive level for the 7 years after that. I have been coaching and teaching at all levels since I was 14 years old. I have been a parent for 9+ years and I am sure you will agree, this is a greater challenge than any job I ever had. No classroom, video or afternoon talk show can ever 100% prepare you for many of life’s adventures such as children, marriage or illness. However, we can find our internal motivation, so we can be at our best in any situation. Nobody has all the answers, but together we can come up with some great ideas and solutions. My motto – “Inspire First, Results Will Follow”.

Todd Johnson, JD
College Admissions Professional.
Todd provides expert advice to help students and families understand the college admissions and financial aid process. He has particular expertise in helping students looking to attend BS/MD programs.

Biography - Todd Johnson is responsible for all college admissions counseling for College Admissions Partners. A graduate of the law school at Washington University in St. Louis, Todd practiced law for 20 years as a trial lawyer in Minnesota before starting College Admissions Partners.

Todd has always had a personal interest in college admissions and was often frustrated watching students choose a college without understanding whether the college was a match for that student. He also observed in talking to parents that they did not understand the basics of college financial aid and as a result were often spending more money to send their children to college than necessary.

Because of his interest in helping students, Todd began providing college admissions counseling to help students and their families find the best college for each student. For more than 10 years Todd has helped students and their families identify their ideal colleges and helped with all issues related to applying to and paying for college. During this time Todd has also volunteered his services to his local public school district serving as the college admission consultant to students at the high school. Todd also helped guide his own two children through the college admissions process.

Todd has been instrumental in bringing a college fair to his local community and has been on the Minnesota College Goal Sunday steering committee. College Goal Sunday is a national effort to help all students, but particularly first generation and under represented students, complete a FAFSA, the financial aid form required to qualify for college financial aid.

Although Todd has worked with students who have gained admission to Ivy League Universities and highly selective colleges, his focus is not on finding the highest rated college for his students. He does not believe that the best college is the highest ranked or the college that has the lowest admission rate. Rather it means the college that is the best fit for the needs of that particular student. Sometimes that means looking at some of the most selective colleges in the country while making sure that at least one safety that is a good fit is also considered. Sometimes it means looking at less selective colleges where a student is more likely to thrive and enjoy their college experience.

From his base in Minnesota, Todd provides college admissions counseling to students throughout the United States as well as international students wanting to attend college in the United States.

Todd is a professional member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, the Higher Education Consultants Association, the National Association for College Admission Counseling and the Minnesota Association for College Admission Counseling. Todd regularly blogs on issues related to the college admissions process and his blog content has been featured by the Chicago Sun Times, Fox News, Reuters and other major websites. It is syndicated by Blogburst.

Annie Fox, M. Ed.
Author, educator, online advisor for tweens, teens, parents and teachers

Biography - When Annie Fox's first book "People Are Like Lollipops" (1971, Holiday House) was published, she wasn't old enough to legally sign the contract! By the time she turned 21, though, she decided that helping kids was going to be her life's work. After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in Human Development and completing her Master's in Education from the State University of New York at Cortland, Annie set off on a teaching career.

After a very few years in the classroom, computers changed her life as she began to explore the ways in which technology could be used to empower kids. She and her husband David opened the world's first public access microcomputer facility (Marin Computer Center) in 1977, which led her to write her best selling book, "Armchair BASIC: An Absolute Beginner's Guide to Microcomputers and Programming in BASIC" (1983, Osborn/McGraw-Hill). From there she tried her hand at screen writing which eventually brought her back to computers as an award-winning writer/designer of children's CD ROMs. (Putt-Putt; Madeline; Get Ready for School, Charlie Brown; and Mr. Potato Head Saves Veggie Valley are just a few of the titles on which she has worked.)

In 1996 Annie dreamed up the idea for The InSite, http://www.TheInSite.org a place "for teens and young adults to turn their world around." She and her husband David still serve as executive producers of that award-winning site. One of The InSite's most popular features is Hey Terra, a trusted online advisor. Annie book "The Teen Survival Guide to Dating and Relating" (2005, Free Spirit Publishing) is based on hundreds of emails to Terra and Annie's responses to them. Annie’s book "Too Stressed to Think? A Teen Guide to Staying Sane When Life Makes You Crazy," co-authored with Ruth Kirschner (2005, Free Spirit), was the result out of Annie’s survey of 1200 middle and high school students on dealing with stress. Through her student assemblies, parenting workshops, and teacher trainings, along with her ongoing work on the Internet, Annie continues working toward her goal of empowering young people through increased self-awareness, emotional intelligence skills and stress-busting strategies.

"Be Confident in Who You Are" (2008, Free Spirit) is Book 1 of Annie's new Middle School Confidential series. Book 2: "Real Friends vs. The Other Kind" will be published in June 2009. When not answering email from teens and parents (http://anniefox.com), Annie enjoys yoga, meditation, hiking, traveling, drawing, photography and, most of all, being with David and the rest of the family.

Biography - It is my passion to help children (and adults) be all that they can be. This begins with self-confidence, self-esteem...in other words, feeling good about yourself! I am a member of National Speaker's Association and speak nationally to businesses, educators, parents, and associations. My educational background is in the fields of elementary education and psychology. My personal mission statement: "To help people to be better at what they do, no matter what that is." In my books, YolandaBaby series, children identify with the dog...her being teased and bullied. This is a "feelings" book. I find that children experience the same emotions as Yoli and can find an area to succeed in their daily lives. Debbie Feit

Biography - Debbie Feit is the author of The Parent’s Guide to Speech and Language Problems, the mother of two children diagnosed with speech disorders, and a veteran of the therapy waiting room. She’s a former advertising copywriter turned freelance journalist whose world was turned upside down when her son was first diagnosed with apraxia at age two-and-a-half. The Parent’s Guide to Speech and Language Problems combines the personal insight of a mom who’s been there with comprehensive, up-to-date medical information, resources, and real-world, hands-on parenting solutions. It’s an invaluable handbook for parents of children experiencing speech and language difficulties. Debbie is also founder of www.ourspecialkids.com, an online resource for parents of all special needs kids. With honesty and humor, Our Special Kids addresses the everyday realities for the parents of the 9.4 million children who are living what Debbie refers to as "the special needs lifestyle" and are not seeing their own families reflected back in the pages of traditional parenting and women’s magazines. You know you're living the special needs lifestyle when you find joy in your son saying, "I hate you" because it's his first complete sentence or if you have to create a new entry in your child's baby book for "first time took meds without having to mash them up and hide them in yogurt." In addition, Debbie advocates for the special needs community through her writing. When she is not contributing articles on child development and special needs topics to national publications such as Parents, Child, American Baby, Good Housekeeping and Delta Sky, she is writing nasty letters to her insurance company and the occasional email to her kids' teachers. She lives with her husband, children, and an unprecedented number of Polly Pockets and Star Wars action figures in Michigan.

Amy Adams
MS, Educational Administration
Professional Educator & Parenting Coach

Biography - I have loved working and helping people since I was a child. Being a parenting coach, professional trainer, private school principal for sixteen years and a mom to four kids, I've learned a thing or two...mostly, that I don't know everything!
When my eldest son was two, he tinkled in the fridge (Yes, he really did!) and it became abundantly clear to me that I didn't have a set response for something like that! The key, I learned, for myself or any other parent is that we engage positively with our children, even when we're upset with them, to convey our expectations and to show them that we care. Let me encourage you to be bold in your parenting, but remember that, "nothing inspires a child's hearing more than praise".

Mark Borowski
Father of Two
Leadership & Parenting Speaker & Author

Biography - First and foremost, Mark is a husband of 13 years and a father of two great kids, Ashley and Olivia. In an effort to put family first and be more of an at-home dad, Mark started his own training and consulting business, The Learning Interface, when his first daughter was born. He tells everyone that this was not only the best career decision he ever made, it was one of the best “life” decisions he has ever made.

When he’s not caring for his kids, Mark is busy training managers and leaders to positively influence others and get results. His business provides training and resources to organizations in the areas of leadership development, teamwork, and group facilitation. Mark also speaks and writes to parents through a variety of media forms about the importance of their roles, and provides resources to help them build strong, healthy relationships with their children.

Always active in his profession, Mark has served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Professional Speakers Association since 2004, taking over as President in July 2008. Prior to that, he served on the Board of Directors for the SEWI Chapter of the American Society for Training & Development from 1999-2003. He led the chapter to a very successful year as President in 2002.

Mark has a Bachelor’s Degree in Management from Cardinal Stritch College and a Master’s Degree in Administrative Leadership and Adult Education from the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. However, he says the education from his two college degrees pales in comparison to the lessons he’s learned from his two kids. He shares those lessons in his new book, “Big Slick Daddy: Poker Strategies for Parenting Success.”

Mark enjoys a hearty laugh, a poignant sermon, a live sporting event, and of course, a good poker game.

Question :my son has become defiant, sarcastic, disrespectful, beligerant, withdrawn, combative and even close to striking me .... confides in school friends with personal family matters rather than talk to me about it, trusts friends and teachers advice over mine, even though I have been there every hour of every day for him for school or any activity since his mother died last October he thinks I have never been there for him, chooses to deviate from school plan to follow what his friends think is a good curriculum when he has neither the interest nor the talent necessary for it, bated me into an argument with his friends prearranged and waiting outside telling them I am abusive and physically hurting him and he is scared of me ( there have been only 2 heated arguments including this one since last October ) to justify it then runs out the door with his bags to an awaiting car of one of his friends parents .... now he is staying at his friends house and will not come home .... he just turned 17 ! ..... I don't know what to do ..... i feel like I have been set up and the parents that help him leave have not called me ! Is this legal ? Apparently I have no say and if I try to curtail his involvement with these people ( my wife always thought they were a bad influence but I let him see them anyway .... big mistake ) my son leaves to go to them !

Question :I have a son as a result of a previous relationship. I assume financial responsibility, stay in touch and visit with him (he lives far away with his mom) when I can. My question is that I have since married and have two children, now 5 and 3 that see pictures of my son around the house. When should I introduce the topic of my son and how can I explain this to my younger children?

Question :My daughter has trouble falling asleep at night (age 6 1/2). She is with me 50% of the time since I am divorced from her father. I think its the comfort of me being there with her while she falls asleep. At times, I fall asleep too and just stay in her bed. Apparently, my ex has caught wind of this (I'm sure my daughter Madison told him) and he says this is unhealthy. I put the TV on for her tonight and she fell asleep in about 20 minutes. Please define if this is unhealthy.
