Question

In response to my eight year old not sleeping in her room... this is an old behavior pattern. She's been doing it since we put her in a bed. Most of it is our fault for no follow through but now that she's eight, it's much more difficult. Any thoughts on resources to start over?

Answer

Dr. Steven Kairys Replied: several approaches 1. Put her in her room and stay there in a rocking chair etc without giving her any attention--do it also if she gets up- always put her back without giving her any attention and try to gradually reduce your time in the room,. Encourage her the next morning to keep trying 2. A star system can give her some added incentives 3. Allow her to sleep over at a relative's house to change the pattern from time to time
